Want to get the most out of your hair extensions? At Bloom Beauty & Extension Co., we’re sharing our expert-approved tips to protect your investment and keep your hair looking flawless between appointments.
Yes, Hair Extensions Can Last—If You Care for Them Right
At Bloom Beauty & Extension Co., we use only the highest-quality 100% Remy human hair—which means your extensions can last up to a year with the right care.
But like any luxury investment, they need a little attention to keep them looking (and feeling) flawless. Here’s exactly what we recommend to extend the life of your extensions—while protecting your natural hair in the process.
Tip #1 –Stick to the Right Products
Using the wrong products is one of the quickest ways to shorten the life of your extensions.
Here’s what we recommend:
Sulfate-free, extension-safe shampoo + conditioner, We recommend discussing a shampoo and conditioner is best for your unique situation with your stylist.
Leave-in conditioner for added moisture and slip
A wet brush or extension-specific detangling brush, We will provide you a complimentary brush with your extension installation.
- Heat protection from hot styling tools. Our Recommendations – Heat Protection Products
💡 Avoid: Anything with heavy oils, silicones, or alcohol near the beads or base of your rows.
Tip #2 – Brush with Intention (And Consistency)
Tangles = tension. And tension leads to breakage.
We suggest brushing:
Morning + night
Before showering or working out
From mid-shaft down, then working up to the root
With one hand supporting the base to avoid tugging
Pro tip: Keep a travel brush in your bag and in the car. Your extensions will thank you.
Tip #3 – Protect Your Hair While You Sleep
Nighttime is a critical time for extension care. To prevent matting and wear:
Always brush before bed
Tie your hair in a loose braid or ponytail
Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction
This keeps your rows secure and your strands tangle-free by morning.
Tip #4 – Rinse and Prep After Swimming or Sweating
Yes, you can absolutely swim and work out with extensions—but you have to treat your hair like the luxury it is.
After swimming or sweating:
Rinse your hair with fresh water
Apply a leave-in conditioner
Gently brush and air dry if possible
Avoid chlorine when you can, or wear a swim cap + braid combo if you’ll be in the water often.
Tip #5 – Never Skip Your Maintenance Appointments
Your 6–8 week maintenance appointments are essential to:
Reposition your rows as your hair grows
Keep your scalp healthy
Prevent matting or tangling at the root
Skipping or delaying your appointments can lead to damage—not just to your extensions, but to your natural hair.
We book your next install before you leave the salon to keep things easy (and your rows flawless).
Bonus – Store Old Hair Properly Between Uses
If you’re rotating extension hair or planning to reuse your hair for future installs:
Clean and dry it fully
Store in a satin bag or original packaging
Keep it in a cool, dry place (away from pets and products!)
With care, your Remy hair can be reused 2–4 times, making it a worthwhile investment.
